Periodontal (gum) disease progression is usually slow and can go unnoticed for months, even years. By the time patients are aware that something is wrong (i.e. pain, loose teeth) it may be too late! The best prevention is visiting your dentist every six months for routine cleanings and check-ups.
Use the following questions to see if you may have some of the Signs and Symptoms indicative of progressive periodontal disease:
1. Do your gums bleed when you floss or brush your teeth?
2. Are your gums red, tender or swollen?
3. Is pus visible when you press on your gums?
4. Do your teeth appear to be getting LONGER?
5. Is your gum line uNeVeN when you smile?
6. Are the roots of your teeth exposed and sensitive to hot or cold?
7. Can you wiggle one or more of your teeth with your tongue or fingers?
8. Are there S P A C E S between your teeth where there were none before? 9. Has there been a change in how you bite?
10. Has there been a change in how your partial denture(s) fit(s)?
11. Do you have bad breath or a bad taste in your mouth?
12. Is your mouth often dry or burning?
If you answered YES to any of these questions, you may have some form of gum disease.
